The stars in this open cluster are by galactic standards quite youngΓÇö only 10 million years old. That is a thousand times younger than the stars in a typical globular cluster. Indeed, NGC 457 is so young that stars may still be forming inside it.
This open cluster is only 30 light years across (globular cluster M92, on the other hand, is 200 light years in diameter).
Over time, gravitational forces from the rest of the galaxy will cause the stars in this cluster to disperse; by the time the galaxy has rotated a few times, NGC 457 will probably no longer exist.
